Social anxiety be gone! If only it were that easy.

As a part-time introvert, I love hosting at home. It allows you to ditch time limits, avoid the overwhelming buzz of crowded spaces, and truly connect with people in a way that feels natural and comfortable. In a world where loneliness and lack of community are on the rise, intimate gatherings can be a great way to foster deeper social connections.

That doesn’t mean the social anxiety will magically disappear – or any anxiety for that matter. But, as the host, you have complete control over the setting, to make it as relaxed or structured as you like.  Whether that means curating the guest list to just include familiar faces or creating a cozy ambiance with soft lighting and background music, you get to shape the environment in a way that feels good to you.

How to help yourself

1. A Familiar Environment: Hosting at home eliminates the unpredictability of public spaces. You know where everything is, you set the tone, and there’s no worry about loud strangers or awkward social encounters.

2. Curated Guest List: Since you know your guests, you’re avoiding the stress of making small talk with strangers. A group of familiar faces creates a more comfortable and low-pressure setting.

3. Smaller Groups, Deeper Conversations: Keeping the guest list small allows for more meaningful interactions. If you know a few of your guests are on the quieter side, consider mixing in someone who’s naturally talkative to keep the energy balanced.

4. Built-in Escape Routes: Unlike a large event where disappearing might feel awkward, at a dinner party, it’s easy to step away for a moment. A quick trip to the bathroom or a step outside for fresh air gives you the chance to reset before rejoining the conversation.

5. Add an Activity or Craft: Modern dinner parties aren’t just about food—they’re about shared experiences. Hosts are incorporating interactive elements to keep guest engaged and make the evening even more memorable. See our previous post with some creative ideas here.

Tips to Make Hosting Even Easier

Prep ahead: see our tips on how to cheat the cooking if this is something you really dread.

Hire the Tablescape: We’re here for the social butterflies and the social introverts (I, personally, flit between both of these dispositions!).

Skip the Small Talk: Use conversation starters like Cards for Conversation (included in our Summer Soiree Tablescape) to jump into fun and engaging discussions. If those feel too deep, create your own by writing playful questions on place cards. Here are a few ideas:

  • What’s the most embarrassing thing you did this year?
  • What did you overhear that made you do a double take?
  • When was the last time you laughed so hard you almost cried?

By thoughtfully curating your dinner party, you can create a space where both you and your guests feel at ease. It’s about fostering connection in a way that works for you, to make socialising less daunting and a whole lot more enjoyable.
